Step-by-step submission process
Got ideas of what you want to write about? Great, here are your next steps:
Pitch your idea
Feel free to reach me out by filling out the form. Tell in a couple sentences about yourself and your background, including social media links.
Then briefly share your idea, adding a potential article title and what you'll cover. Make sure this topic hasn't already been featured on the blog. If there is a similar piece, think about how your story might be different and bring new insights.
Do you already have a draft of your story? Great, share it with me! But make sure it meets our writing requirements described below.
Here are some sample stories for your inspiration:
- How I sped up video editing workflow by 15% using 8 Setapp apps
- What I learned as an Australian indie developer adapting my apps for the EU market and trends
Get an editor's confirmation
I will contact you within five business days to confirm an idea or with additional questions that would be great to cover in an article.
Great ideas don't always fit, and we want to be upfront about why that might happen. Here's when we typically pass on submissions:
- We’ve already have similar content in our blog
- Your story is too promotional and don’t bring value to our readers
- Topic is too broad (like “How to use Mac” or ”How to become more productive”)
- Lack of personal experience
- Missing the practical angle. Don’t forget to add hands-on value. Instead of “Why these 5 apps are great for video editing” it’s better to go with "How I automated my video editing workflow with these 5 apps".
Submit your draft
When your column is ready, send it to me along with your author profile photo and brief information about yourself, following this structure. I will help finalize the article and show it to you before publishing.
I might come back with requests for:
- Additional real-life examples or use cases
- More detailed explanations of technical concepts
- Screenshots or visuals to illustrate your points
- Expanded sections on particularly interesting topics
- Clarification of specific details
I’m always happy to jump on a call to discuss feedback if that's easier for you!
Go public
Once we approve the article, it will be published! We'll share it on Setapp social media and add it to the newsletter, so your story gets more coverage. I encourage you to spread your story around your community too –– let as many people as possible know about your experience.
Keep an eye on the comments section after publication – engaging with readers can lead to great discussions and future article ideas!
Writing tips
You don’t have be a professional writer – I’m here to help you with editing your article. However, there are a few rules that are important to keep in mind when submitting your story to the Setapp blog.
- 1,000 words is enough. I know you have a lot to say, but if you go too in-depth, only your friends and I will read your story to the end.
- Use first-hand experience in your story. Tell about yourself and your daily life, the problems you face at work/personal life and how you solved them with apps. Imagine you are telling this to your best friend over a cup of coffee. Now write it down.
- Avoid being a nerd. Use simple terms, friendly tone of voice and short sentences. It’s not your Master dissertation, and readers won’t give you extra points for complex terms.
- Explore what we’ve already written on your topic. If there's an existing Setapp blog post on your topic, think about what new angle you could take it from. It would be great if you add links to similar articles on our blog to your story. Use phrases like “Check out more about” or “Learn more...”.
- Put value in a title. Avoid clichés and vague phrases. Examples of good titles: “How I finally got my finances under control using just Mac apps”, “How I reclaim 2 hours every day using simple Mac tools”, “My 10 apps for work efficiency that are not at the App Store top”.
- Use your own screenshots. That helps better pass on your experience and makes articles more visually appealing. Don't worry if your personal information is shown on a screenshot –– we sketch it out before publishing. Screenshots should be added directly to the article, not sent as attachments.
- Add tables, infographics, charts or other details to your piece. Details like these make your story more readable and engage readers.
- Follow EEAT rules. Try to bring to your story as much Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness as possible. This type of content stands out really well among AI generated articles. Here, we explained why human writing matters at Setapp.
