Thanks! I'm happy you find Default Folder X useful. You can make Default Folder X's toolbar less intrusive by choosing the "Small Toolbar" style in Default Folder X > Settings > Open & Save > Appearance.

I'm sorry for the trouble. There shouldn't me more than a half second delay between the appearance of a file dialog and the appearance of Default Folder X's controls (there's always some delay because DFX has to rely on the system-provided Accessibility notifications to be alerted that a file dialog has appeared). If it's slower than that, it's usually a result of your system's privacy database being confused - that can delay the notifications. I'm sorry Default Folder X is causing performance issues. This usually happens when there are problems with the macOS privacy controls (the system's database gets corrupted pretty easily).
