A complete guide to all AirPod generations in order

13 min read

Remember Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, getting lost in her music with headphones on in that hotel room? Wired headphones in those moments were like a private world you could carry around with you — pure magic.

Then, in 2016, Apple dropped the first AirPods and, quite literally, cut the cord on how we listen to music. Suddenly, we could slip into our private world, wire-free, just like the characters in those iconic movie scenes.

Let’s walk through my research of all AirPods generations, from those 2016 originals to today’s advanced models, and see how Apple transformed a pair of wireless earbuds into a tech icon.

And, as you read it, I hope you turn on your favorite concentration playlist on your AirPods.

All AirPod versions in order

It’s September 7, 2016. I’m watching Apple’s keynote, fully expecting the usual iPhone updates. Then Phil Schiller gets on stage and casually mentions they’re removing the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 and introducing a Lightning Adapter. There’s this split-second pause (a classic Apple marketing move). And then he reveals it: AirPods.

With every generation, they’ve turned up the volume (literally and figuratively), adding cool innovations like Active Noise Cancellation, Spatial Audio, and even health-tracking features in the latest iOS 18 upgrade. Who knew your earbuds might one day care more about your well-being than your gym buddy?

Here’s every release of AirPods in order:

You might be curious: so, how many generations of AirPods are there, and why were they released in such an unusual timeline (not generation after generation)?

I researched this topic, and technically, there are four AirPods generations so far, but it’s not that simple. Apple doesn’t release “generation after generation.” They update their models only when they’ve got something valuable for customers. And, of course, something to compete on the market with other wireless headphones.

Now, let’s dive into the different AirPod generations model by model.

AirPods 1

The first AirPods were Apple’s bold step into wireless audio. Nobody had done it before. Equipped with the W1 chip, they solved Bluetooth’s biggest headache: pairing. With W1, you could just open the case and tap Connect on your iPhone screen.

But let’s be real: AirPods didn’t start with universal acclaim. They started with memes. “I didn’t even get AirPods yet, but I already lost them,” people joked in X (Twitter). Others compared them to toothbrush heads. Still, behind the humor, there was something undeniable: curiosity.

I guess, if you were one the first who got AirPods 1, you probably felt the same:

Key milestones:

  •  They introduced the world to the idea of wireless earbuds that just work.

AirPods 2

When the second generation arrived, it looked almost identical to the first (but that’s just at first sight). Same sleek design and the same silhouette. But inside? A big upgrade. The new H1 chip made them not just faster but smarter. And if you’ve ever felt that tiny lag while gaming or streaming, the H1 chip’s reduced audio latency smoothed that right out, creating an experience that just felt effortless.

Release year: 2019

What’s inside the Pods:

  • H1 chip: Upgraded from the W1, the H1 chip enabled 50% faster device switching and improved audio stability.

Key milestones:

  • Hands-free Siri and the H1 chip.

AirPods Pro 1

With the first-gen AirPods Pro, Apple introduced a new in-ear design with customizable silicone tips, which came in three sizes. This was the first time I upgraded from my AirPods 1, and it was the best investment in my mental health. With this pair, I could tune out the world around me whenever I needed a moment to focus, thanks to Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).

But the best part was Transparency Mode. One moment, I’d be completely zoned into my music. The next, with just one tap, I could quickly chat with a barista at my favorite cafe and order a decaf cappuccino and a cinnamon bun as if I wasn’t wearing earbuds. But wait for it –– AirPods Max and AirPods 3 went even further.

And, of course, there are users like me, who appreciate this generation a lot, and this is why:

AirPods Max

Just in time for Christmas gifts haunting in 2020, Apple released its AirPods Max model. That year, Apple set a record by selling 114 million AirPods. Well, it could also be just the Covid-19 Zoom era influence. AirPods Max were sold out in a few hours, and if you weren’t fast, you needed to wait months to get a pair.

While every other over-ear headphones brand was using plastic, Apple went all in with aluminum, stainless steel, and memory foam. And instead of a bunch of buttons, they kept it simple: just one button and a digital crown (Apple being Apple). You didn’t even have to turn them on or off, as they automatically went to sleep when not in use.

What I loved most was the Smart Case. Many reviews criticized it, but I personally find it super useful and stylish.

They definitely beat the WFH era:

AirPods 3

To create the AirPods 3, Apple upgraded its classic model with an improved design, enhanced sound quality, longer battery life, and advanced features like Spatial Audio (which actually made me switch from my AirPods Pro). Personally, I’ve always preferred the no-tips design, and this model felt really comfortable.

The addition of Spatial Audio created this rich, surround-sound experience that felt exactly like you were sitting in a theater. To show it off, Apple even released an ad with Harry Styles’ “Music for a Sushi Restaurant,” where visuals of Harry multiplied like echoes across the screen, giving a taste of just how immersive Spatial Audio could be. If you’re into ad art like me –– take a look. This one’s iconic.

Release year:  2021

  • Charging case: Available with MagSafe or standard Lightning options.

Key milestones:

  • The AirPods 3 introduced Spatial Audio to Apple’s standard model.

AirPods Pro 2

The AirPods Pro 2 brought in Apple’s H2 chip. That means Spatial Audio got an upgrade — it became a Personalized Spatial Audio. Using your iPhone’s TrueDepth camera, you can create a sound profile shaped specifically to your ears.

Apple also introduced Adaptive Audio, which adjusts noise cancellation depending on where you are. It adapts to where you are – in a quiet park or the noisy subway. And with Conversation Awareness, the volume automatically lowers when you start talking, making it easy to have a quick chat (for example, order a coffee) without any extra moves.

  • Lanyard loop: A small but thoughtful touch for added portability.

AirPods 4

With the September 2024 release, Apple improved the classic AirPods by including its most advanced tech in two new models (one with Active Noise Cancellation and one without). It was the first time that Apple had ever offered ANC in the open-ear AirPods design.

Some users were still excited about one particular aspect that many were debating:

Evolution of AirPods technology

I still remember unboxing my first pair of AirPods in 2016. That design felt so futuristic back then. They were inspired by the familiar wired EarPods we all had tucked away in drawers, but now they were wireless.

Here’s how AirPods have revolutionized over time:

Model

Design advancements

AirPods 1 (2016)

Open-fit, stemmed design inspired by wired EarPods.

AirPods 2 (2019)

Identical design to AirPods 1.

AirPods Pro 1 (2019)

AirPods Pro 2 (2022)

Same in-ear design as AirPods Pro 1, new XS ear tip size.

AirPods 4 (2024)

Shortened stem with refined contours.

Sound quality improvements

Sound has always been a big deal, but Apple made it feel personal. The first AirPods were great — a simple, wireless way to take your music anywhere. But Apple wasn’t done here.

Here’s how sound quality have been improved with each model:

Model

AirPods 1 (2016)

Introduced wireless audio with low latency.

AirPods 4 (2024)

Brought ANC to the open-ear design for the first time.

Active Noise Cancellation

In 2019, I tried Active Noise Cancellation on the AirPods Pro for the first time (and, to be honest, it felt like a great investment in my mental health). The hum of a plane, and the noisy coffee shop — all gone. But then Apple added Transparency Mode, and I could hear the world around me without taking the earbuds out.

Here’s how Apple has introduced ANC in AirPods:

Model

Active Noise Cancellation features

AirPods Pro 1 (2019)

Introduced Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode.

AirPods Max (2020)

Pro-level ANC with 8 microphones for precise sound control.

Battery life & charging

Battery life has come a long way since 2016. The first AirPods gave us 5 hours of listening time. With the Charging Case, you had 24 hours total.

Here’s the battery charging timeline:

Model

AirPods 1 (2016)

5 hours of listening, 2 hours of talk time, and 24 hours with the Charging Case.

AirPods 2 (2019)

AirPods 3 (2021)

Up to 6 hours of listening, 30 hours with the MagSafe or Lightning Charging Case.

AirPods Pro 2 (2022)

6 hours of listening time (33% more than the original AirPods Pro) and up to 30 hours total with the Charging Case.

AirPods 4 (2024)

5 hours listening (4 hours with ANC), 30 hours with case.

What’s next for AirPods?

While putting this article together, I came across some rumors that AirPods Pro 3 might arrive in the fall of 2025, just a year after the AirPods 4 launch. In this release, I’m most intrigued by the predicted USB-C charging case. Yes, finally — a single cable for everything. Thanks, EU, for ending the eternal “Where’s my charger?” struggle.

But let’s talk about what I find most valuable: the advancements in hearing health. The AirPods Pro 2 has already introduced features like hearing tests and adaptive hearing aid capabilities with iOS 18. I’m excited to see what Apple has planned next. AirPods that warn you when the concert is too loud? Or earbuds that can proactively protect your hearing before it’s too late?

Then there’s also Apple’s environmental mission, which feels more relevant now than ever. They’re pushing toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Hopefully, that means even more care for Earth in the next years.

The past and the future of AirPods versions: Recap

The nostalgic Y2K trend has brought wired earbuds back into fashion. And while I adore Dua Lipa’s iconic wired pod moments and this chic throwback vibe, I can’t help but get excited about every new AirPods release.

That said, the future of AirPods promises some exciting features, but you don’t need to upgrade to every new model to make the most of your current AirPods. With apps like One Switch or ToothFairy for quick connections and Boom 3D for enhanced audio, you can elevate your listening experience while staying mindful of your consumer habits.

Best of all, you can try these tools and more with Setapp’s 7-day free trial. The platform has somany useful apps for Macs and iPhones, that I doubt that you’ll use only the apps I mentioned.
