What is the story of Setapp?

The story of Setapp started in 2016, when Oleksandr Kosovan, the CEO of MacPaw, came in and said something like, “Let’s build a cool app marketplace.” After hours of brainstorming, the team agreed on Setapp as the product name and decided to focus on curation as the key value for users.

Half a year later, we onboarded about 40 apps — some of which are still in the Setapp collection today, such as Ulysses, iStat Menus, and CleanMyMac — and got ready for the beta release.

November 2016: Closed beta for the press, opinion leaders, and influencers.

Does Setapp have hidden fees?

Setapp gives access to more than 260 apps with no limitations and no hidden fees or ads, but there are still a few nuances worth discussing.

About 97% of Setapp apps provide full access to all features with no limitations or ads.
All apps on Setapp are completely ad-free and contain no in-app purchases.
Setapp collection doesn’t include apps that their developers distribute for free elsewhere (the only exception is the SnippetsLab app). All the apps in the collection are paid software by design.

However, there are a few exceptions due to the different business models our partner developers use.

Some apps rely on third-party services (such as OpenAI technologies or cloud storage) that incur extra costs. These costs can add up significantly and may not be fully covered by the Setapp subscription.

There are two ways to address this issue:

Separate plans. Some developers have created separate plans for Setapp users. Let’s say an app has three tiers — Basic, Pro, and Extra, with the higher tiers offering more AI features. Your Setapp subscription might give you access to the Pro version rather than the highest-tier one. Or, the Setapp version can be totally unique and combine features from different tiers.
Own API. Some apps rely heavily on LLMs, for example, AI-powered chatbots that use OpenAI. In that case, you may need to use your own API key to access some of the app’s features.
