1. It set itself as the default for MP4s without my permission. 2. The initial MP4 file was 58.2, and the compressed file was 58.1. Not much compression. 3. Both the original file and the compressed file then triggered a malware warning. “Apple could not verify that file.MP4” is free of malware that may harm your Mac or compromise your privacy. MOVE TO TRASH or DONE. 4. I was not even able to open it with Bitdefender to check the file. I got the same warning message. 5. I deleted the original and compressed files. Then I exported the MP4 again as a fresh file. I was able to open this file with all appropriate programs and with Bitdefender for review. I am deleting Compresto ASAP

Compresto never scanned or altered those files for malware. A bug made it the default app for MP4s, and recent macOS then showed a Gatekeeper warning on any MP4 you double-clicked — original and compressed. The files themselves were fine, which is why a fresh export opened normally. We’re sorry. Please reset MP4s to QuickTime (Get Info → Open with → Change All), and we’ll ship a fix so this cannot happen again.

It managed what the other apps couldn’t do. It got to a specific compression size with minimal loss. And it worked with my “old” Intel processor Mac! 🙌🏾
