I really liked the interface and how easy it is to use. It handled the folder structure well and quickly grouped everything as needed.

I need to sort my home folder (the ~ folder which is /Users/username) However it has folders in such as “Library” which you wouldnt want it to touch. The app has no way to exclude folder before a search, so it takes many many hours to do you home folder. Dont want to just do individual subfolders like “downloads” as it wouldnt move images etc to the correct image folder which sits at a higher level than downloads

Thanks for the detailed feedback — this is a really good point. You’re right, there’s currently no way to exclude folders before running the organization flow, and we understand how that becomes a problem for something like the home directory. This is something we’re planning to improve in further app updates. Really appreciate you calling this out.

So far I find this app very useful. I really like how it continues to watch my folders and reorganize everything I download or add to my documents.

As a developer with terabytes of data across multiple drives, I was eager to try this. However, the Privacy Policy (updated April 2024) is a non-starter for a file organizer. Under "Lawful Basis," MacPaw explicitly states they collect file paths, file metadata, and disk/backup information. While they claim this is for "identifying defects," there is no reason a local file utility needs to sync my directory structure or metadata to servers in multiple jurisdictions (UK, US, Cyprus, Ukraine). Even with their "data masking" claims, the over-collection of granular hardware specs and "navigation breadcrumbs" is excessive. This policy applies across MacPaw’s suite, but for a tool handling personal file structures, it’s a massive privacy risk. I’m uninstalling and suggest others audit these terms before clicking "Agree."

Thanks for taking the time to review our policies and share your concerns — privacy is especially important for an app that works with files. To clarify: Refolder is designed to organize files without using cloud services to store your personal file contents. When AI-powered features are used, only the limited data needed for functionality may be processed, with efforts to minimize shared data and avoid relying on full directory structures or complete file paths for general processing. Like most apps, limited technical or diagnostic data may also be processed to improve stability, investigate issues, and fix defects, as described in our Privacy Policy. We appreciate you taking the time to read the policies and share your perspective.

Really awful. I tried sorting 233 court filings from one case into specific folders (i even tried a specific prompt) and it only will sort into folders with the names “Career , Documents, Education, Finance, Government, Health, Other, Work” All the files are from the same court case, have nothing to do with “government”, “education”, “health”, or “work.” Needs alot of work.

I only understand the start UI where I can choice the directory or path to analyse, everthing after that especially the Dialogs like `Preview Changes ->` are for me not understandable what the Application wants from me or what will happen when I select the shown folder names. The application triggers in me the fealing that the age of `iot` is back, where it was promised that I can wake up in the morning and the coffee machine has finished cooking coffee for me, ready to drink. A promise which is still not available on the market. The description sounds good, and like a app which would help me, but the real app doesn’t do that, I’m confused and ask myself if this app got ever tried out by a human which didn’t develop the application. The UI is fancy for the two screens which I saw so far, until I have to answer dialogs which provides buttons with ambiguous answer options. I’m stuck and annoyed.

Fancy UI, good idea but i’m sorry, it’s not really helpful. To get halfway decent results, so much preparation and post-processing is required that doing it manually is still quicker. Furthermore, the process isn't entirely transparent; for example, folders that were previously deselected get pulled apart.

A very obvious and helpful idea, but it is far from usable. Refolder it spreads files belongs together across multiple categories/folders, and for many files it suggests categories that are not even remotely related to the contents of the file. One example: it filed an article about the cooperative nature of humans under “finance”, along with a couple if invoices. So it is unusable for me in its current form.

Thanks a lot for the honest and detailed feedback — we really appreciate you taking the time to share it. You’ve highlighted exactly the kind of cases we want to improve, especially keeping related files together and avoiding categories that clearly miss the context. If you’re open to it, we’d really appreciate a bit more detail about the proposed folder structure so we can investigate this properly. Please feel free to reach us at [email protected]. You can also share logs via Refolder (menu bar) → Debug → Show Proposal Reasoning and send them by email. That would help us understand what went wrong and improve the results much faster.

[SetApp removed my prior review, saying it was a request for technical support. It was not and shouldn’t have been removed on that basis]. There has been an update. I downloaded again. I’m giving a cautious thumbs up. Here’s why it is cautious: 1. The organization of my Downloads folder is good. The program also did a pretty good job with my Documents folder. The update improved the AI-suggested organization, and the project-based organization looks better; BUT 2. My most complicatd folder was made better in some ways, much worse in others. It’s going to take a lot of manual effort to fix, but the proposed structure is a benefit. For example: the program has a hard time reconizing related files. I have workbook PDF files and accompanying audio MP3s that were in the same folders. They go together. The workbooks are now either in Books or Documents, the MP3s in music. Audiobooks are in music. I get why, but keeping together files of different types that belong together is important.

Thanks for giving it another try — and for such thoughtful feedback. We really appreciate the cautious thumbs up 🙌 Glad to hear the update improved organization in your Downloads and Documents folders. You also raised an important point: related files should stay together, even when they’re different types. Splitting matching PDFs and MP3s into separate folders isn’t ideal, and we agree that context matters more than file format alone. We’re already working on improving this, including better handling of files with matching names or clear relationships so they stay grouped together more intelligently. Thanks again — feedback like this helps shape the product in the right direction.

I really like the gentle retro-futuristic, synthwave vibe. The organising algorithm works really well and is easy to use, and the rename feature is a nice bonus alongside the folder organisation. All in all, a nice little app to have in the collection.
