Hey Charlie, thanks for the compliment and apologies for the troubles! From our internal testing, I know that there can be an initial lag when the editor is just launched. And when doing a lot of trimming, it may stall the editor altogether. For now, if the app gets frozen, the temporary solution is to quit the app and continue editing again—Gifox should always preserve recent changes. Many issues also happen with larger and longer recordings—it helps a lot if they’re smaller in size and shorter in length. We’re working on a big update that will include several editor improvements—hopefully, this will sort out all these problems. We will do our best to sort this out.

Hey Bubba, thanks for giving Gifox a try and for sharing your thoughts! I get that status bar apps aren't for everyone and we had a few similar requests in the past to have an option for Gifox to run as a regular app, especially after it became more than just a recorder. This is in our backlog, we'll do this eventually, but currently focused on other priorities. Regarding having to export all the time – we need to store the original recording / composition if we want to keep the editing functionality (trim, crop, apply different compression settings). If we simply save everything "as is", the editing ability would be lost, so that's why we're taking the "export" approach. That said, we know the app is far from ideal, especially the editor. Thanks for your feedback! Gifox actually does allow to drag-and-drop an image sequence to convert it into an animated GIF. But it sounds like you might be looking for compositing different layers together and animating everything? Adding overlays over existing GIFs is something we plan to do eventually, but right now, editing is fairly simple – trimming, cutting, cropping, duplicating, and rearranging tracks. You can create more complex animations using special software and then use Gifox to convert them into a GIF. We have pretty detailed docs on editing, but I agree, tutorials could be handy – I did make a note and will have a think how this can be done best! In the meantime, try using the lock icon in area selection mode — it saves your previous selection, so you might not need to crop every time.
