There is no option to open an existing Markdown file, which is a baffling limitation. [edit] The developer responded with the hint to just paste markdown in a new document 🤦‍♂️

This is good in general, but needs sync function desparately.

A fascinating app: it seems to be a simplified and friendlier LyX. (A GUI LaTeX word processor.) That’s what I was going to use for a report, but MonsterWriter may work for me.

there’s a problem when type Chinese with Pinyin

It would be awesome if there were more citation options. Very buggy as well, perhaps my own computer but some basic things within writings apps are a lot harder in this one.

Pretty useless for academics

A writing app that doesn’t seem to have a way to use most functions with keyboard shortcuts…

Makes way too many decisions for you. Decides formatting in a way that you can’t reverse when pasting text. Needs a lot of work.

Good for thesis, research writing but the file conversion took too long.

Update: Responsive developer - replied within 10 days and seem to have fixed the reported issue here of the app not starting / being very slow. I do not yet know how this will compare to Typora, but looking forward to finding out now that it actually works. Old Review (2024-05-13): Very slow and does not seem to open or allow creating a new document on macOS 14 with an Apple Silicon processor.

This app does not work well with multi-byte texts.

So far, I’ve only been using MonsterWriter for a little while to write my MA dissertation. It seems like a really nice app for a person like me, who likes to be able to format things to their liking but not to do so until absolutely necessary. I like the way it lets me focus on my writing and sturcturing the work as needed, unlike most word processors. For some major improvements, I suggest implementing a customisable themes system (so I can have things in the colours and fonts I like them to be in during work in progress), easier referencing search and maybe a way to view the front page in advance, rather than just the title.

I really like this. It’s clearly an evolving project, but it’s achieved one of its primary aims, which is to provide a clean, welcoming writing space. I use Scrivener for a lot of projects, but it often feels like overkill when I need to get something down and formatted quickly, which is where Monster Writer wins for me. The minimal, distraction-free interface means I can get things from head to page quickly without getting sidetracked. One downside is its relatively large footprint, but this seems to be down to having the whole Electron packaged bundled with it, which could probably be resolved fairly easily. It looks like a browser-based version is in the works, though, which would solve this. It’s a promising app, all in all - I’m keen to see where the developer takes it!

I was trying to paste text with markdown code but I couldn’t find an option to do so through interface. I’ve tried dru&drop file, open a folder or import. But there is no option to import Having such option could help me to use MonsterWriter as a final result of my research or work from different sources. Would be glad to see such option.

The cursor may not function properly when typing CJK text, as it tends to jump randomly. Certain templates do not support CJK texts. Most importantly, the entire app is laggy and not very user-friendly in terms of UX.

Not finding this very easy to write my ebook, creating table of contents and chapters, for starters. THe amount of syntax and grammer errors in the help doc itself is quite surprising for a text creation app!

Incompatible con 10.15 la versión de Setapp, mensaje de que falta una librería en el paquete de aplicación. A pesar de que el programa funciona en 10.10 o superior, adquirido en Setapp ya NO es compatible en 10.15. ¿Quizás setapp no se molesta en instalar versiones compatibles con tu sistema? Es un problema con las suscripciones, exigir actualización permanente obligatoria. Es la principal razón para ir dando de baja todas ellas.
