Set the rules for link opening
A Mac user uses 15 apps per day on average. Many people also use more than one browser. That’s enough to sign up for a pretty messy workflow — each time you click some link, there’s good chance it will open in the wrong app or browser. Here’s how to avoid the trouble.
Open links in select browsers and browser profiles
OpenIn helps you establish the rules as to where to open your links.
Say Chrome is your default browser, but you also use Safari for some tasks. No need to choose one over the other, you can use them side by side: In OpenIn Preferences, go to Browsers > Applications. Add Chrome and Safari by choosing Add application… You can leave it at that and make OpenIn your default browser. In this case, a small app selection dialog will pop up each time you click a link.
To automate your flow, you can add custom rules, such as links matching certain domains or using a key modifier when clicking on the link to open links in select browsers.
On macOS Sonoma, you can also open links in different Safari profiles, which are typically used to separate personal browsing from work: add Safari to the list of browsers > Edit > Profile. Then, add profile number and name, and establish custom rules for opening links in a profile.
Just like you set up profiles, you can set up opening links in Safari and Firefox Private Mode.
Open links in the right apps
Send meeting links to the right meeting apps: in OpenIn Preferences, go to Calls. Add Zoom, FaceTime, or other meeting apps you use. If you wish, add the rules: for example, you can add a key modifier for FaceTime: the app should only open when you click the meeting link while holding down the Command button. In other cases, Zoom will open.
Tip: starting with Sonoma, you can create Safari web apps. This is a great idea if you want to open certain types of links in apps that you don’t have installed on Mac — such as Reddit. Once you create the app, add it to the list of Applications in OpenIn and set the rules.
Avoid email app confusion
Use OpenIn to send mailto links to the right email apps, including web email clients such as Gmail and Outlook. Go to Preferences > Mail apps and create your custom flow.
