Two ways to deal with MOV on Mac
MOV is a proprietary file format for QuickTime, and since QuickTime is ubiquitous, MOV became ubiquitous on Apple devices, too. But nothing can beat the old good MP4. All players can play MP4, but not all players can play MOV. So here’s a fix. Two fixes, actually.
Turn MOV into MP4 with Permute
Permute is a universal media converter that tweaks file formats in a sec, whether it’s a video, image, or audio file. Here’s how to convert MOV to MP4:
In Permute, click the Plus button in the lower-left corner
Choose your MOV video
Select MP4 from the drop-down menu
Click the Start button to convert.
You can also crop or trim your video before converting, extract an audio track, etc. What’s important, Permute won’t lower the quality of the video, so you’ll get your original video wrapped in the new format. This is a valuable feature that most media converters miss.
Tip: Try Permute with Downie. Created by the same developer, they work great together — Downie for downloading videos from the internet, and Permute for converting videos to other formats. You can send downloads directly from Downie to Permute.
Play MOV with Elmedia Player
Don’t want to convert videos every time? In this case, get a player that can open MOV files, as well as virtually all media files on Mac. We mean Elmedia Player, of course.
The obvious benefit is that Elmedia works with way more formats than other players, including the rare ones. But not only that, you also get picture-in-picture, bookmarking, playing YouTube videos without ads, and video tuning — that’s right, you can make videos look better. Mind-blowing.
